Like the warmer Dauphin, this mid-toned brown is a classic example of the elegant 'drab' tones loved by homeowners of the 18th and 19th centuries. Far from being dull, as our modern understanding of its name would suggest, it simply means a colour without brightness. Try it on woodwork with a softer Farrow & Ball white, like Off-White, on walls.

About Exterior Masonry

Where to use: exterior brick, render, concrete, terracotta and stucco. Not suitable for highly alkaline surfaces (such as lime render or walls previously coated with silicate or mineral paint), very porous surfaces or Fletton bricks.

Preparation: no primer is needed on sound surfaces. Clean off any mould or algae with a fungicidal wash and let the wall dry fully. Repair damaged or unsound render and concrete, then patch prime those areas with Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer. Leave new render and concrete for around 3 months before painting. Apply two coats of Exterior Masonry when air and surface temperatures are between 10°C and 30°C.

Coverage and drying: up to 8m² per litre per coat, so this 5 litre tin covers up to 40m² per coat. Dry in 2 hours and recoat after 5 hours.

Size: 5 litre. Exterior Masonry is available in 5 litre tins.
