Rust-Oleum 5401 Epoxy Impregnation Primer Kit

Rust-Oleum 5401 is a solvent-free epoxy impregnation primer for concrete and other porous mineral surfaces, supplied as a complete kit of base and activator.

Key features

• Improves adhesion on porous mineral floors
• Impregnates porous and brittle floors
• Contains no solvents (VOC 0 g/l as supplied)
• Can be applied to slightly damp surfaces
• Also ideal as a tack coat for 5180 Epoxy Repair Mortar

Where to use it

On concrete and masonry, mainly by roller or brush, as a key before Rust-Oleum systems such as 9100, 5500, Pegakote and 9400.

Technical details

• Mixing ratio base : activator 3 : 2 by volume (kit supplied matched); induction time 10 minutes; pot life 30 minutes
• Touch dry, handle and recoat 16 hours; fully cured 7 days (20°C)
• Theoretical coverage 10 m²/litre at 100 µm
• Thin with Thinner 160 by porosity: very porous up to 20%; normal 10–30%; power-floated 20–40% (thinning raises VOC)
• Brush (natural bristle) or 12 mm polyester roller (14–18 mm on textured surfaces)
• Apply at 10–35°C, humidity below 85%, surface 3°C above dew point
• Concrete should have at least 25 N/mm² compressive and 1.5 N/mm² tensile strength
• Clean up with Thinner 160

Preparation

New concrete should cure and dry for at least 30 days. Degrease, remove laitance and loose concrete by vacuum blasting or etching with Surfa-Etch 108, and remove curing compounds completely. Repair defects with 5180 Epoxy Repair Mortar.
