Rust-Oleum 9180 Epoxy Metal Primer, grey: a high build two-pack epoxy primer for bare or blasted metal, supplied as a complete 5 litre kit with 9103 activator.

Where to use it

On bare steel, blasted steel and properly prepared galvanised surfaces, or as an intermediate coat. Recoat with 9100 topcoats for protection against corrosion, strong chemicals, spillage and high humidity. Where good UV resistance is needed, Rust-Oleum recommends a 9600 polyurethane topcoat.

Technical details

• Mixing ratio 1 : 1 by volume (kit supplied matched); induction time 30 minutes
• Pot life 8 hours for a 5 litre mix at 20°C
• Touch dry 1 hour; handle 2 hours; recoat after 16 hours; fully cured 8 days
• Theoretical coverage 7 m²/litre at 75 µm dry (150 µm wet); max. 125 µm dry per coat
• Brush for touch-up only; roller (8 mm) up to 10% Thinner 160; airless 5–15%; air-atomised up to 20%
• Apply at 5–35°C, humidity below 85%, surface 3°C above dew point
• Matt; clean up with Thinner 160; VOC 421 g/l

Preparation

Degrease, then ideally blast to Sa 2½ (max. 50 µm profile). Remove salts and white rust on galvanised steel with Surfa-Etch 108 or sweep blasting. For surfaces to be submerged, blast to Sa 3.
