Rust-Oleum Metal Cladding Primer is a water-based, quick drying single-pack anti-corrosion primer for all sound metal substrates, including plastisol-coated cladding.
Key features
- Can be overcoated after just 1 hour
- Water-based and low in VOC (14 g/l)
- For bare or blasted steel, galvanised steel, zinc, aluminium and plastisol
- Available in white, light grey and iron grey to help the opacity of the topcoat
System
Followed by a coat of Metal Cladding Topcoat, it gives corrosion protection under light industrial exposure. On bare or blasted steel, apply two coats of primer before the topcoat. On new plastisol cladding the primer can remain slightly tacky.
Technical details
- Touch dry 30 minutes; handle and recoat 1 hour; fully cured 3 days (20°C, 50% RH)
- Theoretical coverage 12.5 m²/litre at 35 µm dry (80 µm wet); max. 45 µm dry per coat
- Brush, roller (8–12 mm woven acrylic or polyester) or spray; dilute sparingly with water if needed
- Apply at 10–35°C, humidity below 85%, surface 5°C above dew point
- Clean up with water and soap straight after use
- Matt; heat resistant to 80°C dry heat; keep from freezing
Preparation
Degrease by alkaline or high-pressure (steam) cleaning. Ideally blast to Sa 2½; otherwise scrape and/or wire brush to St 3. Remove zinc or aluminium corrosion with Surfa-Etch 108 and rinse well. Sand intact coatings. The surface may be slightly damp.
